"Illinois Central 6250, an EMD SD40-2 originally built for the Burlington Northern and later bought by the IC and rebuilt into an SD40-3, is one of only a handful of black deathstar painted SD40s left anywhere on the CN. The 6250 made a surprise appearance on the original IC mainline, leading a procession of odd units. After a long delay in Champaign yard thanks to a trailing (and formerly leading) GP38-2, IC9622, suffering mechanical problems, the 6250 leads A408 down the mainline between Savoy and Tolono at speed. As we raced down US45 to follow the train, we found ourselves competing in two races: one with the train, and the other with the clouds in their hurry to block the remaining sunlight. There was a very short window in which we were winning that race..."
