Few things scream "midwest" the way a quartet of Illinois Central locomotives passing between a pair of grain elevators does. Neither elevator in Leverett, IL is operated by the railroad anymore, but that doesn't make them any less impressive. Though the Illinois Central fell to the flag of Canadian National in 1999, some of the old IC locomotives still wear their original black and white paint. Moments like these, when a train of all IC black power gets sent through, make you stop and wonder what things might be like if the IC had remained independent instead. In such a world, this wouldn't be far from normal, but today, where less than 40 black engines survive, a train like this is nothing short of glamorous.
