To span Lake Decatur, the Wabash Railroad ordered the construction of a 637-foot concrete arch bridge in 1905. It was one of the largest concrete structures in the world upon completion, though today it has since lost that title. This bridge is a crucial artery for the Norfolk Southern into Decatur, and is also conveniently open for photographers. The RoadRailer was arguably the most popular train on the NS in Illinois for its final few years, and capturing one of these trains made of trailers on rail wheels over the bridge seemed to be a rite of passage for locals. It's no wonder why, it's a stunning view - if you can mind the characteristic smell of Decatur, anyway.
