"For the very last day of the Great Race From Ogden, UP 4014 began in Laramie. Before setting off, it pulled itself and its train, including 844, onto the main and sat there for a few brief minutes. That morning, 7000 feet above sea level, it was overcast and cool, which meant that as soon as it began to steam up, it just didn't stop. Within a mere minute, the locomotives were wrapped in a white robe of smoke that would wash over all of the spectators trackside as the train began to surge forward on its very last leg of the trip. Now, Big Boy would tackle Sherman Hill for the first time in some 60 years..."
